Thank you for your interest in participating in the City of Asheville and Buncombe County's Residential Food Scraps Drop-Off Program. *Note: This Program is for RESIDENTIAL USE ONLY. Interested businesses, schools, and organizations need to contact food waste diversion service providers.
There are currently 9 food scrap drop-off locations. Details on facility hours and what compostable materials are allowed are below, available on the City and County composting websites, and will be emailed after registration is submitted.
Once registered, participants have access to all listed locations.
Please complete this form to help us track our outreach and the impact of our food scrap diversion efforts. Once you submit this form, you'll receive a welcome email within 3 business days with a combo lock code to access all locations that have locks. No combo or lock information is required to drop off scraps at the Buncombe County Landfill or County Transfer Station.

8) Buncombe County Transfer Station, 190 Hominy Creek Rd, Asheville (Please only use this site if you're already planning a trip to the Transfer Station for other waste disposal or recycling. It can get very congested in the lot.)
9) North Asheville Community Center, 37 East Larchmont Road, Asheville *NEW* (opened Feb. 2026)
All locations are open to both City and County registered residents.
Accepted Items:
* All food scraps including egg shells, fruit peels, dairy, meats, fish, etc.
* Compostable paper products (YES: food soiled paper, greasy cardboard, BPI-certified compostable to-go containers, and shredded paper; NO: metal or plastic film coating)
* Compostable plastics (BPI-certified compostable ONLY)
* Pizza boxes
NOT Accepted Items:
* Plastic bags and wrappers
* Plastic-coated (Shiny) take-out boxes or plates
* To-go hot and cold drink cups that are NOT specifically marked "BPI-certified compostable"
In partnership with the NC Department of Environmental Quality, The City of Asheville and Buncombe County, we are happy to offer FREE kitchen countertop food scrap collection totes (while supplies last). Bins are NOT mailed to participants. Location pickup details will be included in the welcome email.
